Venice strike

Some of the 110 seasonal workers employed by the Venice Biennale (160 during the opening days) are unhappy about their working conditions and are on strike, picketing at the gates of the Giardini exhibition venue. The strikers outline their many grievances in a statement being handed out at the exhibition entrance: unpaid overtime, lack of recognition for experienced workers (who have worked at the Biennale for more than ten seasons), mandatory unpaid courses without the promise of work at the end of them etc.

The workers are calling on visitors to write to the Biennale's organisers in their support, and for the organisers of the Biennale themselves to act to protect the labour laws from 'dangerous, Dickensian influences where the mocked workers are the symbol of a culture emptying itself'.
